WORK

Cone & Graham, Inc. completed the full replacement of the Old Coachman Road Bridge over Alligator Creek in Pinellas County, Florida. Originally constructed in 1925, the century-old structure was replaced to improve safety, storm resilience, and long-term mobility for the surrounding community.
The new bridge spans 69 feet and features a widened 45-foot overall roadway section, including two 11-foot travel lanes, 5-foot shoulders, and 5-foot sidewalks on both sides. The deck elevation was raised to provide additional clearance over Alligator Creek, reducing the risk of flooding and overtopping during heavy storm events. Hydraulic improvements were made to expand the creek’s capacity through the structure, supporting better drainage and long-term stormwater performance.
The project also included utility coordination and drainage upgrades, along with a Joint Project Agreement (JPA) with the City of Clearwater for relocation of an existing reclaimed water line. All work was performed under traffic in a constrained corridor, requiring phased construction and ongoing coordination with county agencies.
Funding for the project was provided through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), Impact Fees, and the Penny for Pinellas program. With a design life of 75 to 100 years, the new structure not only enhances safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians, but also anticipates future multimodal needs through the inclusion of permanent sidewalks and shoulders.
The successful completion of the Old Coachman Road Bridge Replacement strengthens a critical crossing in Clearwater and reflects Cone & Graham’s continued role in delivering durable, community-focused infrastructure across Florida.
